If you’re coming along Canterbury Rd from the city, cross over Bayswater Rd and make a U-turn at the first set of traffic lights (Ramsay St) and TLC church is about 100m on your left. There’s ample off-street car parking at the venue.

We’ll be meeting at this new venue for the foreseeable future.

Annual End of Year Barbecue and Social Night

combined with the Annual General Meeting

To celebrate the end of another year and the coming festive season, it’s time for our annual BBQ. Rather than a formal presentation, we’ll be indulging in a superb dinner featuring nibbles, BBQ meat, salads, desserts and wine, beer and soft drink. A great opportunity to meet up with kindred spirits and chat about AutoCAD and whatever else comes up. We’ll set up a computer and video projector and show some interesting movie clips from around the internet. If you’ve got any favourites that might interest the group, please bring them along on a USB stick (G-rated only please – we are meeting in a church!).

Also, I don’t know how we do it, but we’ll squeeze in the Annual General Meeting to elect office bearers and set membership fees for the coming year. At present, the prevailing view is that we keep fees at zero for existing long term members (that is, basically everyone who’s been coming to meetings over the last year or three) and keep the “joining fee” of $60 for new members, but that is subject to discussion and approval at the meeting.

We will call for nominations for Vicaug office bearer and committee positions at the meeting, but if you can’t attend and would like to nominate, please let us know by return email.

If you’re a current member, the BBQ is free, otherwise we ask that you pay $15 to cover the cost of food and drink.

Lots of Discussion of Interesting Stuff!

“Round table” discussions of any AutoCAD problems you might have (and hopefully the solutions!) plus the usual News, AutoCAD Tips and friendly chat about whatever we find interesting.

Bring along your USB memory keys etc. and you can get a copy of some of the items demonstrated.

Report on the October 2019 Meeting

Our roving correspondent Amico has sent us this report on the recent October meeting:

Just returned back from Orange after spending a week up there with work. Can tell you all that those poor farmers need rain and real quick!!!!!!!!!!  They are doing it very hard at the moment.

Just want to share these pictures that Aaron Powter sent to me recently during the Fusion 360 presentation at our last members meeting in October.

It was a great night and extremely well presented by Aaron. His product knowledge and presentation skill was outstanding. Must invite him back to our big Christmas “bash”.

I believe the product is definitely world class and the user interface looks and feels like a good program to learn. From memory it’s the first time we were exposed to CAM “machine tool paths” and that alone generated much interest in the product.

Fusion 360
Following on from Brett Baker’s recent session on Autodesk Fusion 360, we were so impressed that we felt it worth exploring further. We are lucky to have Aaron Powter from Autodesk present the software, this time with a special emphasis on the manufacturing interface such as CNC machine control.
You may not be aware that Fusion 360 is free to use for hobbyists and start-up companies (I think that means and income of less than US$100k per year.) Personally, I was sufficiently intrigued to download and install a copy myself and have had a go on it. There are numerous tutorials on Autodesk.com so you can be an expert in no time! I urge you all to do the same.

The DEVOLUTION of AutoCAD

Yes, it’s DEvolution, not Evolution! We’ll be looking at evolution in reverse by going back through the thirty years of CAD ages.

Peter Godfrey and John McKinna will demonstrate how far we have come and how well off we are now compared with the “old days”. They will be showing AutoCAD through the ages by attempting to draw a simple model in

Autodesk Revit 2014 – the future (?????),

AutoCAD 2014 – Autodesk’s newest and shiniest AutoCAD,

AutoCAD Release 14 – a classic version from 1998, fondly remembered by many,

AutoCAD Release 10 with DRC Auto, another classic hit from the late 80’s, and

AutoCAD v1.4 – one of the very first versions from 1984!

And some of these will be running on Microsoft’s latest Windows 8.1.

Déjà vu is a term that comes to mind. Expletives from the floor may be tolerated, but certainly will be forgiven.

Come along and see how CAD has progressed through the ages. Should be a real hoot!

Annual General Meeting

This month’s meeting will contain the AGM and the requisite elections and reports. An important occasion, since we will be formalising the union between Vicaug and OEAUG. If you (or anyone you know) feel you want to take on a committee role, please let us know, either on the night or, if you can’t make it, send us an email. It’s not at all onerous and a great way to while away a pleasant evening chin-wagging at the home of one of the committee members.

Model Documentation with AutoCAD 2013

Continued from the June meeting. One of the big features (yes, it’s a feature, not a bug…) of AutoCAD 2013 is much improved model documentation. This is when you take a 3D model, constructed of solids, and use it to produce 2D documentation. If you’ve used the mechanical flavours of AutoCAD, you’ll find it familiar. We started to work through in June, but got only half way through! So tonight we’ll do the other half. If you’ve got the work books from that meeting, please bring them along. Otherwise, please let me know if you need a copy. I’ll print them as required, plus a couple of extras.

 Yes folks, that’s this coming Monday! And it’s the first meeting for 2012.

This is on the west side of Cardigan St, just north of Victoria St. Car parking is available at the kerbside or in the centre of the road. There is also a multi-storey Wilson car park right next door, which is open until 10pm (fee payable). Alternatively, the area is well served by public transport: trains to Melbourne Central station and / or trams along Swanston Street.

We are in our usual venue.

Our meeting room is called a Studio, room number 9405032. Take the lifts up to the fifth floor, follow the corridor around to the right and the Studio is on the left side, towards the end of the corridor. Follow the pizza gas if you get lost!

FEATURED THIS MONTH

Inventor Fusion

Tonight’s main presentation is by Branko who will show us a new feature of AutoCAD 2012 called Inventor Fusion. It’s provided with AutoCAD at no extra cost, so what can it do for us? Personally, I haven’t the faintest idea but I’m looking forward to Branko putting it through its paces.

As well as Branko’s presentation, we have an important issue to discuss: the future of Vicaug. There is a proposal to merge with the Outer Eastern group. This would bring a number of advantages: more breadth of committee participation (as well as a larger membership base) which will bring a better “critical mass” for attracting visiting speakers. There are of course some questions to be resolved such as where and when we meet but let’s have a talk about it and make some decisions.

After that (if we can squeeze it in) we’ll have a quick look at a little freeware program to update (search and replace) text across a bunch of drawing files. This can be a real timesaver if you need to fix a set of drawings prepared by someone with less than perfect spelling!

Also, there’ll be “round table” discussions of your AutoCAD problems (and hopefully the solutions!) plus the usual News, Your AutoCAD Questions Answered and friendly chat. And, of course, our usual TV program! (although we might change things around and show it at the end of the meeting as an experiment.) If you have any requests for a particular favourite, shoot me an email and I’ll see what I can do.

Due to popular request, we will be starting the meeting a little later (at 6:30pm) than in previous years. This is due to the fact that parking in the vicinity is free after 6:30pm. We will try to start the presentations at 7:00 pm sharp, so the meeting should finish at a reasonable hour. (Although I have to admit that a few of us have been known to congregate on the footpath outside after the meeting and chew the fat until a somewhat less reasonable hour!)
